Which laptop?
I was recently looking around for laptops. But I am not your usual ‘gamer’ type laptop person. If i get something, it has to be reaaaly worth it. And a $4000 dollar laptop just to play counterstrike (source) a couple times a week is not really worth it (considering that i have a desktop which can do that currently). This is all of course hypothetical since I won’t actually need one for anything besides watching porn in English (hey, it actually happened), but here is approximately where I am going.
I am mainly looking for a laptop which I can:
- use/bring most places,
- which has good battery life (approx 3 hours +),
- which is not shite,
- which is moderately cheaply priced,
- which can do some gaming (special case only for ONE of the laptops, an “added bonus”(because this usually cancels out number 2) ),
- is small-ish/light
- Runs XP. Although I can put on anything I want (being a computer techie lol)
Here they are in order of “I WANT”-ness. Click on the title for a link to a review (will open in new window).
1) Non Existent Laptop (unreleased)

This would be a laptop which has not been released yet, which would have a Intel Penryn (or Via Nelhame’ (the new one)) processor, a video card which doesn’t suck the batteries (or switchable like the Viao), and has a small screen.
2) Sony SZ series

I really like this laptop for some reason. It looks good (arrg…why is marketing tricking me!), but its only distinctive feature is it’s ’switchable’ graphics cards. It can switch between the basic intel and the good nvidia graphics at the flick of a switch. Useful as when you are gaming, you usually have access to power, but when you’re not, you don’t. This conserves alot of power giving it approx 3 to 6 hours depending on which graphics card you use.
3) HP 2133 UMPC

This unreleased UMPC does fit all the criteria. I may or may not have it above the other one because of its size, even though it has a crap video card. It is rumored to have a Penryn processor, a definite plus. It better have good battery life or else I’m not getting it…
| Specificatons | |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer | HP |
| Model name | 2133 UMPC |
| CPU type | VIA |
| OS | Various Options |
| Display Size | 8.9″ 766 X 1366 |
| Keyboard | YES |
| Mouse Pointer | YES |
| Weight | 1300 gm |
4) Fujitsu Lifebook (example of a current Penryn)

This laptop has most of the above, but is not quite what I am looking for. It has a 4 hour battery life configured with el-cheapo intel graphics, so i might as well get the Sony S series.

Sony and HP fail massively. Just ask Hanwei how good (bad) his HP is…
Yeah, my ASUS is good for gaming but fails at battery life too. Get a Dell or whatever George has…

Everything’s wrong with Sony. 8400, and somehow that requires a switch that extends battery life?
Really, anything but a Mac Book Air will do you fine.

ASUS Eee PC.
Agreed with Richaod, HP fails in delivery. Looks good though.
HP Pavilion HDX and HP Compaq 8710w laptops are craxy, so I exempt them since they are for the seriously large walleted or 3DS user.
ASUS EEE PC IS TEH OWNAGE.
